5 Colombian Chocolate Bars You Must Try

Colombia is one of the largest producers of cacao in the world. Around 95% of Colombia's cacao exports are classed as "Fine Flavour" by the International Cacao Organization. The Colombian government has also increased its focus to increase the production of the crop, offering subsidies and training in growing and farming cacao. In some parts of Colombia, cacao has started to replace the lucrative coca crop, which is used to be made into cocaine and fuel crime.

The focus of growing the wonderful crop of cacao, which is turned into delicious chocolate has resulted in an increase in craft chocolate makers, the country once renowned for its coffee is slowly becoming a chocolate enthusiast paradise.

Here are five Colombian chocolate bars you must try.

Taita Chocolates

Taita Chocolates starts in Puerto Lopez, a small agricultural town where the cacao used in their chocolate is grown.

Taita grows its own cacao on a 23-hectare cacao plantation and is the true definition of tree to bar.

Their entire farming practices are organic, they use their own compost, natural herbicides and use efficient microorganisms.

To maximize the flavors and aromas of the cacao, the cacao pods are selected manually and are sorted by size, in order to guarantee a homogeneous fermentation as well as uniform roasting.

Their Taita Chocolates 80% chocolate bar was featured in our October 2019 Craft Chocolate Subscription Box.

Maki Cacao

The word Maki means "hands" in the indigenous Quechua language, a native language to the Andes Mountains and this best describes their chocolate-making process.

They source their cacao beans directly from the hands of farmer associations of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and Tumaco, Colombia.

Their blends are inspired by the magnificent and diverse ecosystems of Colombia. They believe in conscious products that take care of nature, support communities and use natural ingredients generating consumer welfare.

All the herbs and fruits used are sundried and contain no additives and preservatives or artificial ingredients.

Their stunning packaging is made from corn and is 100% biodegradable.
