Kekao Monthly Craft Chocolate Club - October 2020
Welcome to October! Fall is the time for warm drinks and craft chocolate bars from your Kekao Box.
You won't find any Halloween chocolates in this box. What you'll find is artisanal small-batch chocolate made with the finest cacao from around the world.
Let's take a closer look at what chocolates you can expect to receive this month with the Kekao Box.
WHAT'S INSIDE KEKAO'S CRAFT CHOCOLATE CLUB OCTOBER BOX
Marou, Faiseurs de Chocolat:
Marou was one of the first bean to bar makers in Asia. When Vincent Mourou left his advertising career in San Francisco, he moved to Vietnam to find himself. This is when Vincent met Samuel Maruta, a banker from France living in Saigon with his wife and two kids. The two had nothing but a blender, an oven, cake tins, and Sam's kitchen. Samuel and Vincent continue to work with a tight network of small farmers who they buy the best quality beans from.
They pay above-market rates (at the moment, double cacao’s commodity price) to encourage and compensate the most committed and talented farmers in the country. They’re proud to call this fair trade, by any name.
This fine acerbic Vietnamese chocolate is produced with cacao beans from Dak Lak. Due to the spices grown there which mix with the dark chocolate, it owns an intensive long-lasting taste with a surprisingly spicy flavour.
Tasting notes: Red Fruit & Spice
Based on family recipes and named for founder George Domurot’s niece, a National Park Service Forest Ranger, Ranger Chocolate Company carefully handles each cacao bean to unlock nuance, regionality, and terroir-driven flavours in their chocolate.
Ranger’s addictive granolas, caramel sauce, and gourmet candy bars complement their two-ingredient single-origin bars for a unique product line. Like all good Rangers, they also take care of the planet, using candy bar proceeds to plant trees and take care of wildlife.
Maple sugar is made by evaporating the water from maple sap, leaving behind pure maple sugar crystals. Maple sugar tends to have a sweeter taste. Paired with a bold fruit forward Trinitario cacao, the resulting chocolate bar has a unique flavor profile that we think you're going to love.
Tasting notes: Strawberry & Maple
Dick Taylor Chocolate:
Adam Dick and Dustin Taylor have always loved crafting. With a background in woodworking and boat building, they have always worked with their hands. Craft is a guiding principle in their lives.
After hearing about the craft chocolate movement in the late '00s, they saw similarities in woodworking and craft chocolate making. They became fascinated with the idea of the chocolate experience and in 2010 bought their first chocolate-making equipment.
Their chocolate captures and highlights the subtle flavour nuances in the cacao they source from around the world, with the goal to make an enjoyable chocolate experience for us.
Delicately roasted Oregon hazelnuts have been paired with their exceptional milk chocolate made from earthy Brazilian cacao and old-fashioned, A2/A2 whole milk from Alexandre Family Farm.
Tasting Notes: Nutty & Creamy
Markham & Fitz:
Markham & Fitz started in 2014 when two University of Arkansas alumni Lauren Blanco & Preston Stewart pulled their savings together to buy chocolate making equipment. Markham & Fitz's mission is to celebrate people and the cacao bean. They practice sustainability like zero-waste initiatives, compostable and recyclable packaging, transparency in the supply chain, and sourcing high-quality cacao beans.
This chocolate bar is a 52% dark milk chocolate with Caramelized Pecans & Black Salt. The beans in this chocolate hail from the rural hills surrounding Matagalpa, Nicaragua by cooperative, La Colonia. By partnering with Enliven Cacao in Nicaragua, they hope to create long-lasting relationships with cacao farmers to make our industry a more sustainable, empowering, and equitable place.
Tasting Notes: Nutty & Woody
Taza Chocolate makes stone ground chocolate. Cacao is so complex in flavour that they want to let it shout loud and proud. That is why they do less to bring us more. They stone grind organic cacao beans into perfectly unrefined, minimally processed chocolate with bold flavour and texture, unlike anything you have ever tasted.
Stone ground, organic Mexican-style dark chocolate discs with warm cinnamon spice. Experience chocolate with true grit! Two discs in each package, perfect for sharing!
Tasting Notes: Floral & Cinnamon
