Colombia is one of the largest producers of cacao in the world. Around 95% of Colombia's cacao exports are classed as "Fine Flavour" by the International Cacao Organization. The Colombian government has also increased its focus to increase the production of the crop, offering subsidies and training in growing and farming cacao. In some parts of Colombia, cacao has started to replace the lucrative coca crop, which is used to be made into cocaine and fuel crime.

The focus of growing the wonderful crop of cacao, which is turned into delicious chocolate has resulted in an increase in craft chocolate makers, the country once renowned for its coffee is slowly becoming a chocolate enthusiast paradise.

Here are four Colombian chocolate bars you must try.

4 Colombian Chocolate Bars You Must Try

Taita Chocolates

Taita Chocolates starts in Puerto Lopez, a small agricultural town where the cacao used in their chocolate is grown.

Taita grows its own cacao on a 23-hectare cacao plantation and is the true definition of tree to bar.

Their entire farming practices are organic, they use their own compost, natural herbicides and use efficient microorganisms.

To maximize the flavors and aromas of the cacao, the cacao pods are selected manually and are sorted by size, in order to guarantee a homogeneous fermentation as well as uniform roasting.

Tibito Chocolate

Tibito Chocolate started in 2015 out of curiosity and desire to explore the richness of Colombian cacao beans.

They believed Colombia's cacao was not being fully exploited and decided to work in order to achieve the credit that both Colombian cacao beans and chocolate deserve.

With this in mind, they carefully created top-quality artisan chocolate, by using the wonderful richness and great variety of the cacao beans found in different Colombian regions.

Their chocolate is a marvelous trip throughout Colombia’s cacao flavors, fragrances, and textures.

Cacao Hunters

Cacao Hunters transform cacao beans from different corners of Colombia into single terroir chocolate bars.

They promote and encourage farmers dedicated to producing wild and heirloom cacao varieties, and help them with their farming practices to improve the fine flavor of cacao.

Cacao Hunters achieves sustainability that goes beyond producing the best Colombian chocolate by preserving rare varieties of cacao production.

Cacao Hunters have won two back to back gold medals at the International Chocolate Awards.

Chuculat Chocolate

Since 2008 Chuculat has been producing delicious dark chocolate bars in partnerships with small cacao producers from different Colombian regions.

Their focus is on dark chocolate bars, coated chocolate nuts and 100% Chocolate bars.

They work with their farm partners to improve their crops and post-harvest techniques, as well as to strengthen their organizations.
